Chinese Universities and Innovation
Comparisons with the United States
In China’s ambition to become a science, technology, and innovation power, its research universities are leading the way. Flush with generous state support, they are expanding quickly to meet soaring demand for the next generations of scientists, engineers, and managers, undertake cutting-edge research and development, and nurture technological commercialization in the Chinese marketplace. But with political and other constraints, can China’s research universities become truly world-class institutions on a par with their counterparts in the U.S. and other developed economies? The keynote presentation will be given by Professor Xue Lan, Dean of the School of Public Policy and Management and Director of the China Institute for Science and Technology Policy at Tsinghua University. Professor Chen Ling of the School of Public Policy & Management at Tsinghua University will also talk about the role of Tsinghua University, often described as China’s MIT. This event is co-sponsored by The Study of Innovation and Technology in China Project at UC’s Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, and the Center for Pacific Economies at the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies.
